Lazy Girl Picnic Guide: The Picnic Is Calling (And You Must Go)

There’s something about the last days of summer that makes us all a little dramatic. The sun starts clocking out earlier. Your inbox starts making threats. And suddenly everyone is talking about “back-to-school energy” like it’s a real zodiac season.

But we’re not letting go that easy. There’s still sun on our shoulders and warmth in our thighs—and the best way to honour that? An impromptu picnic. A “we’re not done yet” feast on the grass, a curb, a bench, or a hidden pocket of park that still smells like sunscreen and grilled meat.

Whether you’re solo, coupled up, or rolling in with your crew, here’s how to throw together a perfectly chaotic end-of-summer picnic with minimal effort and maximum enjoyment.

For 1–2 People: Romantic Main Character Energy

This isn’t a BBQ. It’s a vibe. A portable apéro hour. A European grocery haul in a tote bag.

If you’re flying solo or boo’d up, head to your favourite specialty deli (we love Scheffler’s Deli at St. Lawrence Market) and let them do the work for you:

  • Herbed olives or tapenade
  • Small rolls of goat cheese wrapped in prosciutto
  • Dolmas, pâté, or a tiny terrine
  • 6 oysters, freshly shucked and sitting on ice
  • Luxurious crackers that cost too much but taste like holiday
  • Any salty, sliced cured meat (bresaola, soppressata, mortadella. Be a little freaky with it)

Pro tip: Tell the deli you’re building a picnic. Many will portion and pack everything so you don’t have to futz with containers or sticky lids in the park. If they’re fancy, they might even offer a pre-packed “picnic for two” set.

$$Budget Tip$$: Keep it at $20–$25 per person. Add a canned seltzer, or go full sparkle with a mini bottle of champagne. Toss in a fruit like cherries or green figs for dessert (or for the gram).

For 3+ People: A Chill Potluck Picnic

Big group picnics don’t have to be a production. Actually, they’re better when they aren’t. Text your people and say:

“Bring something delicious that won’t melt. See you at 4.”

Set a theme if you want, but otherwise:

  • Make it a potluck. Everyone brings one thing in a shareable portion. No main courses necessary, just vibes and variety.
  • Mini cooler. Essential for seltzers, sparkling wine, or non-alcoholic beers. Don’t forget ice packs.
  • Buy dessert. Cupcakes, brownies, or cookies from a local bakery = instant joy.
  • Prep for heat. Choose dishes that travel well—Pelau rice, a roasted veggie or couscous salad, or crunchy lettuce with dressing on the side.
  • Utensil-free is ideal. If it can be eaten with your hands or a fork, you’re winning.

Other Smart Additions:

  • A linen napkin or two for that “yes, I picnic in style” energy. Also: hand wipes.
  • A Bluetooth speaker, a deck of cards, or a small bouquet of flowers = instant ambience
  • A pocket-sized fan if the sun is doing the most (we’re not judging, we’re fanning too)

End-of-Summer Moodboard

This time of year hits different. You’re halfway between summer fling and fall hustle. So stretch the golden hour. Toast with plastic cups. Let the juice run down your wrist and fall asleep in the sun like a cat.

Autumn will come for us soon enough, with its pumpkin obsessions and spreadsheet resurrections. For now, we picnic.

Late Summer Picnic Menu: A Lil Bougie, A Lot Delicious

For 1–2 People (a lil solo self-care or boo’d-up vibes):

  • Herbed Olives + Black Olive Tapenade — salty, sexy, and spreads like a dream
  • Goat Cheese Wrapped in Prosciutto — decadent, but not fussy
  • Dolmas (stuffed grape leaves) — vinegary perfection in every bite
  • Pâté or Country Terrine — paired with seeded crackers or crostini
  • 6 Shucked Oysters on Ice — fancy, but fits in a small cooler
  • Mini Baguette or Lavash Crisps
  • Two Canned Sparkling Seltzers or Mini Bubbles — because hydration can sparkle
  • Seasonal Fruit — a couple figs, late summer peaches, or blackberries
  • Optional Sweet: A Single Pistachio Cannoli or a Chocolate Croissant from your local bakery

Pro tip: Let the deli know you’re building a picnic – most places will slice, pack, and even help you portion to-go.

For 3+ People (crew picnic, potluck vibes):

Main:

Sides:

Dessert:

  • Brownie Bites, Mini Lemon Tarts, or Store-bought Cupcakes

Drinks:

  • Canned sangria, cold hibiscus tea, or sparkling lemonade
  • A few freezer packs in a cooler keep things chill

Vibes:

  • A speaker, our Spotify playlist titled “Moody Eats Summer”, and one slightly chaotic friend who always brings three knives but no forks.
